About 2021 Fraser Valley Biennial

This year represents the sixth iteration of the Fraser Valley Biennial, an exhibition that brings together exceptional works of art produced by artists in the region over the past two years. This year’s Biennial continues in this valuable tradition, while also ushering in some timely changes and adaptations. The 2021 Biennial will again be presented at five venues in total, and The Reach is working closely with each of our presenting partners to develop unique versions of the project that will suit the character and scale of their exhibition spaces. We are pleased to be working again with our partners at the Abbotsford Arts Council, the Kent Harrison Arts Council, the Chilliwack Cultural Centre, and the Mission Arts Council. This exhibition is toured throughout the Fraser Valley in order to present the artist's work to a variety of communities within local gallery spaces. As in previous years, the 2021 Biennial was an open call to artists based between Hope and Langley to submit works of art created within the past two years in any medium. But this year artists were particularly encouraged to submit work that has been catalyzed by, responds to, or anticipates possible futures resulting from the current state of global affairs, including the COVID-19 pandemic and growing demands for racial justice. For this iteration of the Biennial in particular, we as co-curators felt a responsibility to be strongly inclusive of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) artists, and the result is a Biennial exhibition that embodies this particular time and place in the visual arts, and the challenges we currently face. We extend our thanks and congratulations to the artists included in the 2021 Biennial, and we hope there is much in this exhibition that visitors will find inspiring, hopeful, and thought-provoking.
